Scripture Calls Her “The Woman”
Genesis 3:15– “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.”Jesus crushed the head of the serpent (Colossians 2:15). The “woman” whose offspring does this is naturally understood as Mother Mary, who gave birth to Him.
What if we didn’t have to assume? Jesus Himself reveals it. The only two times recorded when Jesus spoke directly to His mother, He called her “Woman”:- John 2:4 – At Cana: “Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.”
- John 19:26 – At the Cross: “Woman, here is your son.”
She Becomes Our Mother at the Cross
Revelation 12:17 – “Then the dragon was angry with the woman, and went off to make war on the rest of her children, those who keep the commandments of God and hold the testimony of Jesus.”John 19:27 – “Then he said to the disciple, ‘Here is your mother.’ And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.”
From the Cross, Jesus doesn’t just give John a mother. He gives all His beloved disciples a mother. She is the New Eve, the mother of the Church.
We Are One Body in Christ
1 Corinthians 12:27 – “Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.”Ephesians 1:22-23 – The Church “is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.”
Ephesians 4:4-6 – “There is one body and one Spirit… one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all.”
Galatians 3:26-28 – “For all of you are one in Christ Jesus.”
Luke 22:19-20 – Christ gave His body—flesh and blood—for us at the Last Supper.
We became members of the Church, which is His Body.
She Gave That Body to Christ
John 1:14 – “And the Word became flesh and lived among us.”Luke 1:35 – “The Holy Spirit will come upon you… therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God.”
The Holy Trinity chose Mary so Christ could enter creation. Jesus received His Body—flesh and blood—from her.
Let this sink in. After His resurrection, Jesus ascended to heaven with that same body. It is the same flesh and blood He received from His Mother.
God chose her for the Body of Christ. She is the Mother of Christ, the Head. And she is the Mother of the Church, His Body — that is, all Christians.
Not the Source, But the Mother
Mother Mary is not the source of grace for our salvation, nor is she the creator. She is a creation like us, but unique for the reasons above. Most importantly: She is the Mother of our Lord, the Mother of the Church, and our mother.
